Open Food Facts days 2022 group.png

Open Food Facts exists thanks to the citizens who give their time and talent in many different activities. We are a large international family that gives a unique character to this beautiful project, made for all, by all! 🌍✨

🍊 A consumer who is concerned with their health & that of their planet?

🧑‍🎓 Are you a student needing some practical volunteering experience?

🧑‍💼 A retired professional looking for a project to keep those neurons firing?

👩‍💻 A tech wizz? Diversifying your skillset?

There are lots of different ways to contribute!

Ways to get involved at a glance (non-exhaustive)

Note #1: it’s not a set-in-stone team list and will probably evolve over time; so if you have skills that don’t match any of the topics mentioned here, don’t worry, please fill in the form, telling us how you would like to contribute to the project. You can also choose to be in several teams, if you feel like it or have the time!

Note #2: You don’t need to be an expert in the field.

First step: sign up on the Contributor Skill Pool

To facilitate the involvement of our contributors and allow the project to grow in a more dynamic way, we are setting up a Contributors Skill Pool, as well as teams of volunteers by theme.

The aim is to match your skills and interests to the needs of the project.

Whether you are already a very involved contributor or have just arrived and want to participate, we invite you to fill in the form below. (All personal data you enter will be kept confidential and used only by the permanent team to contact you).

🖊 CONTRIBUTOR SKILL POOL FORM (duration: 3-5 minutes)

Then what?

You will be called upon for one-off projects or regular actions, depending on your wishes & availability.

We would also like to be able to organise meetings and webinars (online or in person) in order to exchange and advance the project together.

Teams

🔗 Database

The database is at the core of the project, and it's so easy to help. You could start by downloading the mobile app on your phone and add or improve products. The Open Food Facts website also has many opportunities to contribute. You could check out our list of products to be completed and start making improvements. Or try accepting one of our contribution missions. How about improving the overall quality of the data?

💻 Tech

Most of the development work required to create and maintain Open Food Facts software and tools is done by volunteers. We welcome expertise in the Open Food Facts back end (Perl and MongoDB); the API (JSON); our website (HTML5, JS, Foundation); iOS native (Swift); Android native (Java); AI (python, R); and translations.

📣 Communication

To reach a broad audience, we need various content: both written and visual. Check out our communication page to get started.

🏭 Partnerships

Get various producers & brands on-board to participate in the effort of food transparency !

💁‍♂️ Events

Help organise events, represent and pitch Open Food Facts at fairs, conferences, schools & universities, companies, non-profits etc.

🧑‍🏫 Going global

Open Food Facts is a global project that involves products from over 160 countries. To reach as many nationalities as possible, we need to translate, adapt, create content & also build local hubs. Translations are key to the project's growth, but so is reaching out to national producers, public entities & local partners.

🗃 Fundraising

As a non-profit organisation, donations are essential to our activity (especially to finance the common in the long run). Help Open Food Facts raise funds & run crowdfunding campaigns.

Knowledge and Documentation

This wiki is our central hub for knowledge and docs relating to the project. Help us to maintain and enrich the wiki. This is a great opportunity for professional writers such as tech writers and content developers to diversify their skillset.

Community

We want to grow and nurture our community of contributors. You can find us in just about every corner of social media: Facebook, Slack, Twitter... We especially need people who can welcome new contributors, show them how we do things, and answer questions. If you love people and want to help them succeed, this is your space!
