WORK IN PROGRESS

Introduction

Can OFF support the dutch Disk of Five (nl)? End November 2019 the dutch government has decided to introduce Nutri-Score in 2021. In the time in between they want to cooperate the international Nutri-Score coordination group to have Nutri-Score adapted to the national Dutch diet advice: the Disk of Five.

The Disk of Five (DOF) (Schijf van Vijf) is a diet advice for healthly eating, which consists of five slices.

  • Fruit/Vegetables
  • Fats
  • Dairy, nuts, fish, legumes, meat, egg
  • Bread, wheat products, potatoes
  • Beverages

For each slice one or more product categories are defined. On a finer level the amount and regularity of the intake is described. Or the nutritional values or ingredients are taken into account.

This approach is very similar to the definition of a diet within OFF. A diet is defined by a set of rules, which fit the diet. These rules can be an ingredient, a category, a label and a nutritional value. A diet can have multiple levels, which define how well a product adheres to the diet rules.

In principle the DOF diet has one main level: either a product fits or it doesn't. Products outside DOF can be subdived in two groups: daily and weekly choice.

Disk Of Five Rules

The first step is to find the rules used by DOF. To find these rules, the official 2016 guidelines are used (Bijlage 5). The rules are defined per slice and product groups within a slice.

OFF interpretation

This section will describe how the Disk Of Five algorithm can be adapted to OFF.

OFF DOF Algorithm

OFF should follow the same algorithm as the Disk Of Five Algorithm:

  • assign OFF product category - each product should have a product category assigned, otherwise the DOF can not work;
  • map product category to DOF categories - t is attempted to map the OFF category to a DOF category:
    • each OFF category should correspond to a DOF category. As there are only a limited number of DOF categories, this can fail. The product is then unrecognised with respect to DOF.

OFF Changes required

Category taxonomy

  • introduce the categories en:red-meat (meat from mammals) and en:white-meat. The intake from red meat should be limited and takes a less prominent place in the Disk Of Five.
