Sub-sites for countries

Old design (before January 10th 2014)

One sub-domain per language.

e.g.

  • fr.openfoodfacts.org -> products with French as main language
  • en.openfoodfacts.org -> products with English as main language

Current design (after January 10th 2014)

One sub-domain per country + one "world" sub-domain.

e.g.

  • fr.openfoodfacts.org -> products distributed in France
  • us.openfoodfacts.org -> products distributed in the United States
  • world.openfoodfacts.org -> all products

Transition from languages sub-domains to countries sub-domaines

Assigning countries to products - done Jan 10th 2014
  • a new field was added for countries in November 2013
    • auto-populated using the ip address of the creator of products
  • for all existing products without a country, added one country - Jan 10th 2014
    • using the place of purchase field if specified and recognized (countries + some popular cities)
    • using the ip address of the creator of the product
world + country sub-domains - in progress since Jan 10th 2014
  • sub-domains map to countries instead of languages - done Jan 10th 2014
  • redirect en.openfoodfacts.org to world.openfoodfacts.org
  • fix links pointing to [language].openfoodfacts.org instead of [country].openfoodfacts.org
  • generate list of countries with number of products to put on first page of openfoodfacts.org
lists of tags (e.g. brands, categories, labels etc.) per country
  • compute lists
  • display lists
nutrition facts stats per category and per domain
  • compute data
  • display data
number of products per-country for each tag

e.g. for a given category or brand, list the number of products per country

Taxonomies

  • Translations for every language of each field value
  • Multiple synonyms for each field value in each language

Design and definition

Global taxonomies

Translation work

  • Get the strings to translate in a po file, so that we can use standard translation tools (GetText, PoEdit, Launchpad, Pootle)
  • Get external translators on board (the Launchpad team could translate everything within weeks in many languages)
