The Reusers Team at Open Food Facts focuses on fostering relationships with individuals, organizations, and applications that utilize the Open Food Facts database. Our primary goal is to support and expand the reuse of our open data, thereby advancing our mission of food transparency and accessibility globally.

- Enhances Credibility: Showcases the real-world utility and value of Open Food Facts data, building trust and attracting more partners and funding.
- Facilitates Innovation: Provides a platform for developers and researchers to build new tools and insights on top of our comprehensive food data.
- Ensures Compliance: Guides reusers in understanding and adhering to the Open Database License (ODbL), ensuring proper data attribution and usage.
Our mission 🎯
To empower and grow the ecosystem of mobile apps reusing the Open Food Facts database by:
- Identifying and mapping mobile app reusers.
- Improving their experience with the API, data, and documentation.
- Encouraging contribution back to enrich the commons and build a virtuous circle.
Recent achievements
- Initial Reuser Survey: Sent a survey to existing API and #reuse Slack members to document current data reuse, receiving 20 actual replies from 1651 emails sent.
- Improved SDK READMEs: Began refactoring README files for various SDKs (e.g., openfoodfacts-js, Dart) to improve clarity and developer experience.
- Enhanced documentation for reusers: Contributed to new and updated documentation, including guides on scanning barcodes, contributing to the image refresh API, and explanations on JavaScript usage strategy.
- Guidelines for reusers: Developing comprehensive guidelines for reusers regarding data usage, ODBL compliance, and questions on data splitting.
- Reuser journey mapping: Actively mapping the user journey for new mobile app reusers using tools like Excalidraw to identify and address pain points.
Work in Progress
- Redesign of API documentation: Investigating tools such as Redocly to enhance the presentation and usability of the API documentation, aiming for better support for OpenAPI 3.1.
- Formalizing new reuser capture: Implementing a process to efficiently capture and document new reusers
- Advocacy for Open Food Facts API: Continuing efforts to promote the Open Food Facts API
- New "powered by & contributes to OFF" logo draft: Designed and launched a specific logo for reusers to display, highlighting their use of and contribution to Open Food Facts.
- Webinar design for reusers: Created design materials for an upcoming webinar aimed at engaging the reuser community.

- Clickable reuser logo landing page: Developing a clickable landing page for the "powered by & contributes to OFF" logo, potentially featuring interactive contribution statistics.
- Web server logs analysis tool: Creating a tool to analyze web server logs to measure the frequency of reuser app requests and identify areas for optimization.
- Automated Odoo contact creation: Developing a workflow to automatically create contact entries in Odoo when reusers fill out the designated form, including adding icons to reuser entries.
- New "Reusers" section on the website: Preparing content and design for a dedicated section on the Open Food Facts website to showcase data usages and reusers.
- Reuser communication templates: Developing standardized email templates for initial contact, follow-ups, and thank yous to reusers, incorporating information about license compliance and contribution.
- Seeking reuser testimonials: Actively working to solicit and publish testimonials from reusable apps on the Open Food Facts blog to highlight successful integrations.
